Deanna Marine - Adrian, Michigan
My mother is my hero in MANY ways... but I'd like to nominate her because of the heroic sacrifice she made over a year ago to help improve the life of a friend's husband. The husband of a lady my mother works with, Dean, had been struggline with renal failure (kidney disease) for a signifcant length of time. He had been enduring the painful and time consuming process of dialysis every week when he was placed on the waiting list for a new kidney. My mother saw the need, and decided that she would donate one of her healthy kidney's to Dean. Don't ask me how, but she KNEW she would be a match for him. She was. the University of Michigan performed the surgery and one of of my mother's kidneys are now implanted in Dean. The surgery was a success and his qualify of life has improved significantly because he is able to resume traveling, hunting and the other hobbies he had to give up because of the dialysis. My mother bravely and selflessly gave of herself, literally, to improve the life of another. I think that makes her a hero. And I'm very proud to be her daughter.
Linda - Manchester
My hero is my mom because she has been sick since April with breast cancer. She had 2 surgeries then had 7 weeks of treatments. She still took care of me and my brother & all the animals. our dad works 24 hours and she still did everything and drove to the hospital every day for treatment. Even when she was getting sick and tired, she would just rest some. She made sure my brother still had his big birthday party here at the water park, took care of us when we were sick and hurt. We still had our doctor appointments to. She never gave up.She did some things with us so we had some fun this summer like we went canoeing, to the lake, we got to go to a speical camp for kids whose family has cancer. My mom is my hero, cause she went though a lot to get better and still was there for me and my brother.

Her job is very challenging and requires a lot of physical and mental strength every day! (She?s only 5? and probably not quite 100 lbs!).
She is a single mom with two young children, whos husband passed away last spring.
She is active in her church and is also on the board for a community outreach to help victims of abuse. Although things can be very stressful and tiring for her, she doesn?t complain, and is always right there to be the first to help when it is needed.
She has always been very giving, thinking of helping others before herself.
She is a great mother and a great example of living the ?good? life!
We are very proud of her and know that she truly deserves to be honored for being the hero she is!
Julaine Dyke - Whiting, IN
Julie is a single mom raising two little boys who is working two jobs and putting herself through full-time engineering courses at Purdue University.
She is a great mommy to her boys, who are her priority at all times! I wish she knew how many others look up to her strength and courage, because in today's world it is very hard to accomplish only a portion of what she seems to do so easily every day.
We are very proud of her and know that she truly deserves to be honored for being the hero she is!
Julia Gilbert - Ypsilanti MI
My wife Julia is my hero. She resigned her position with a prominate engineering firm to raise our Autistic son, and our little girl. She started her own company now that our little one's have started shchool. She is a hard worker, "self-less", giving, a great mom, my best friend, and my wife.
David - Taylor Michigan
My husband David who is a step father of my 4 children is a great man and a hero. My husband works at the border as a CBP, customs and border protection officer. He risk his life every day to keep his country safe. My husband spent many years in the military, he believes in his country and his family as the most important things in life. He has raised my 4 children with the same morals. My oldest son is now serving in the AirForce, and is stationed at the pentagon, and our daughter is serving in the Army and is now deployed in Iraq. We still have 2 younger children to raise, but I know that they will have the same ambition and insperation as their older bother and sister, only because of the greatest hero in their lives, their father.
Averee Davis - Paw Paw, Michigan
Averee Davis is my daughter, she is 9 years old and she is not only my hero, but her best friends as well.
On day in the thrid grade Averee and her friend Shelby were at lunch. It started just like any other day and Shelby being the funny girl that she is said "watch this I will swallow this strawberry whole".
After just a few seconds Averee noticed that Shelby's face was turning red. Averee stood up behind her and gave her the hymlick, and the strawberry came flying out of her mouth.
The school heard about this and at the weekly asembly named Averee "the home town hero" I am a school bus driver and was lucky enough to be at the school to see the asembly.
I think Averee is a hero and so dose Shelby's family.
thank you for your consideration
we hope to hear from you soon
Kellee Davis
proud mom
Carol - Detroit, MI
My mom Carol is my hero. She always finds the time to give to everyone before she thinks of herself. She is an inspiration to our family. When she was diagnosed with cancer she was forced into retirement. On her worst days she still finds a way to do for her family especially her granddaughter who keeps her motivated and on her feet. She picks my daughter up from school during the school year, takes her to her foreign language classes, swimming and camp in the summer. She makes sure her family is always taken care of. My mom is my best friend and I don't know what I would do without her. I love her so much. Every chance I get I always make sure she knows how much I appreciate her.
Taylor Reuille - Harlan, IN
Taylor is a hometown hero to everyone in and around the community. She is building Indiana's FIRST "Boundless Playground", a completely barrier-free playground for children of ALL abilities. Taylor stated "If children with disabilities are not able to play at a playground, then why should I or other children who don?t have disabilities be able to play?" The playground, "Taylor's Friendship Circle", will include many different activities to accommadte the needs for those with sensory impairments (hearing and visually impaired), physical, developmental, and cognitive disabilities. A Boundless Playground benefits children with and without disabilities by providing opportunities for all children to play together side by side. Because of Taylor's enthusiasm and commitment to this project, Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation, Turnstone Center for Children and Adults with Disabilities, and The League for the Blind & Disabled have collaborated with us on this project. Taylor has already raised $10,758.43 and presented this check to the mayor of Fort Wayne, Tom Henry at a recent press conference. At the press conference Mayor Henry stated "There are more than 100 Boundless Playgrounds across the nation, and we are proud to create Indiana's first facility of this nature. This venue, which is the vision and dream of 6th grader Taylor Reuille, will serve the region's families and children with disabilities". Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Director Al Moll stated "Taylor's dream provides an excellent opportunity for the community to get behind a great cause for the right reason". For more information on Taylor and how she is making a difference in the community, please visit www.taylorsdream.com and www.fortwayneparks.org. Taylor has also been in the local newspapers and well as the local news television stations. If it wasn't for Taylor, there would not be a playground for ALL kids to be able to play together.
Thank you for your consideration.

Amy - Wyandotte, MI
She's a single mom who has raised her 17 year old son all on her own. I have to give her a lot of credit because it hasn't always been easy, but she always made sure that he was taken care.
Hiram Barker - Sheridan, IN
Mr. Barker is our hero because of what he does for our kids. He has been a sixth-grade teacher for Western Boone schools for the past ten years where he has taught and inspired our local students to dream big, overcome obstacles, and to make positve decisions for their future.
He was the teacher for my twin daughters this past year. They have always struggled in school, but Mr. B was able to break his lessons down into understandable lessons for my daughters and to instill into them the knowledge that they truly are capable.
Mr. B also spends 24 of his 36 school weeks working with students after school in the Afternoons ROCK in Indiana program. He wants to make sure that he has done everything for every one of his students to make sure that they have a positive future. The ROCKs program that he runs is such a successful program for Western Boone. He has almost 100 students sign up to stay after school with him every year.
In a world where education seems to always be on rocky ground, we have a teacher here that truly loves and cares about each and every one of his students. Teachers just don't get recognized enough in this country.
I know many of the students personally that have always disliked school...until Mr. B. He puts superheroes up around his room to help inspire his students. He doesn't realize that he is already a hometown hero for us.
Karen DeCoster - Britton, Michigan
Mrs. CeCoster is always there with a helping hand not only for her family but for her extended family the Britton-Macon Area School. She volunteers for numerous jobs and activities so the youth in our area can have the best.
David Plante - Brighton, MI
Over the past weekend we were on a tubing trip and my son was taken by the current in the river and headed for some logs and trees. The river was running really fast that day and everyone else was getting to far ahead to stop the crash between the trees and my son. David jumped into the water letting everything go he was carring and headed his way. Just as my son's tube tipped over and his face headed stright for the water David grabbed him by the back of his vest and pulled him free. Had he not been there so quick his face would have been submurged in the water and who know what would have happen. He is truely a hero and we can not thank him enough for his quick action.
Robin Nelson - Indianapolis, IN
My mom is the best! She has raised me to be very independent and has taught me what is very important in life. She works full time and owns her own business, does housework and laundry and still finds time to volunteer her time to different organizations and of course finds time for me. She has taught me to respect others and to be strong and go after what I want in my life. She has taught me that I can be anything I want to be even with a learning disability. I want to become a vet and take care of animals.

I will never forget coming home from one of his kidney procedures, Jarrod said "You know mom, I wish I could say it was that bad, but I know it wasn't half a bad as what Jesus went through." Jarrod is my hero and my inspiration!

My mom is my hometown hero because she supports four kids on her own. Michael Albright - Wyandotte, MI

Stephanie Seidell - Muskegon Michigan
I don't even know where to begin. Steph is an inspiration to me everyday. She is the kind of friend who can make you laugh yourself to tears and forget whatever bothers you, she helped take care of her mother as breast cancer claimed her life, she took in foster care kids most with special needs and gave them a feeling of security and love. She has been the patient loving mother of two beautiful girls and after discussing it with her husband and the girls decided it was in her heart to share that love with other kids. She adopted a special needs infant who has flourished in her care and in hopes of adopting two more young girls came upon a set of three brothers in need of a stable loving home and couldn't turn away. In the process of adopting the boys she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her first worry was that they would cancel the adoption! She not only managed to keep her family flourishing and calm, she endured a double mastectomy, reconstruction and later upon learning she was at risk for other cancers, also suffered through a complete hysterectomy. All with an amazing strength based in faith, humor and love of family. I struggle to even put it all in words. I had a hard time with how to best support her during these difficult times because even then she seemed to be holding everyone else together! She may not be everyone's hero but to those of us who are lucky enough to be in her life she is our hero.
Janet Willis - Hamilton, Ohio
Janet is my aunt and in 1991 shortly after she married my uncle and they had their first child together she became a mother to two teeneage children when my mom who was a single parent passed away in a car accident. To me she took on the hardest job a person could ever do. We had our moments that were bad but in the long run she became like a mother and best friend to me. I could go to her for anything at any time. She taught me that no matter how hard things could ever get from that point they can only get better. And when I was in my time of need after I had my son, and my house burnt her and my uncle dropped everything they were doing at the moment and came and helped me and my family and even took my son who at the time was 4 months old home with them so we could find a place to live. She treated me at that time i feel like I was her very own daughter instead of a niece. I love my aunt very much and she is my hero who took on a position that no newlywed family should have to do. I admire her for that in ways that cannot be described.
Averee Davis - PawPaw, Michigan
Averee my nine year old daughter who in the third grade saved her best friends live.
I am so proud of her, I just have to share with everone.
One day at lunch Averee a third grader was sitting next to her best friend. Shelby who is known for being a class clown and alway joking, said "watch I will swallow this strawberry whole". So she did and started to choke on the berry.
As Shelbys face started to turn beat red and she was sweeting, Averee knew that something was wrong. Averee stood up behind her friend and gave her the "Heimlick maneuver". After two times the strawberry came flying out.
Paw Paw Later Elementary held an assembly and gave Averee the name of "HomeTown Hero", I was lucky enough to be at that assembly and Averee was so proud and Shelby so happy. Shelby's parents sent Averee a boquet of ballons to her class room.
Thank you for your consideration. Even if you don't pick my Averee She will alway be a hometown hero in my eyes and Shelby's.
Kellee Davis (mother)
McKenna Hewitt - Chesaning, MI
My daughter, McKenna, is really a hero! At age 7 she became a big sister through our recent adoption. She became a big sister better than anyone expected considering is happened overnight! McKenna's sister, Sami has since been diagnosed with a liver disorder called Alagille Syndrome. Though Sami takes lots of extra attention, McKenna has never complained. In fact, she has developed a sense of empathy that very few people ever have--let alone a kid. McKenna always thinks of others, one time coloring pictures for the team of doctors at Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. She's a great student, a wonderful daughter, and a super big sister! We plan on visiting this winter as a surprise for this hero--just McKenna with mommy and daddy. This is some well deserved "alone" time with us while Sami is at home with grandpa and grandma. I'm sure you can see why McKenna is my hero!
Kimberly Bronson - Fort Wayne, IN
My daughter Kimberly is my Hero. She is a single mother with a 10 year old son Kael, and a cancer survivor. She always works hard not even slowing down with the Cancer. She finished her 2006 classes in June, had devastating and painful cancer surgery in July and returned to teaching in August 2006. She is as brave a warrior as I have ever seen. She knows that God is always with her. She has given her time and talent to our community by teaching dance through praise and worship since 1985. She and her students performances have thrilled many audiences. Kimberly has taught hundreds of children and adults in the Fort Wayne Area through Praise In Motion, her church, school plays, swing choirs and many other places. She is also a great homeschooling mother that has overcome many great adversities.
Kimberly honors all of her students each year and entertains and inspires many audiences but she rarely receives personal recognition. I would love for Kimberly and her son to be honored and entertained at Splash Universe. Thank you for your consideration.

gail birky - elkhart indiana
my mom is a very loving mom and friend to anyone who needs her. i have a sister who recently passed away at the age of 29. she had a long time illness that caused her to have someone to care for her 24 hours a day. and of course mo mom stepped in and took care of her even though she isn't exactly healthy herself. i have a 13 year old sister at home as well and she had to grow up a little faster then normal and she never got the chance to go anywhere with my mom. so i guess this would be the perfect place for them to just enjoy themselves
Penny Maloney - Knox Ind.
My mom is my hero. She has taken in her grand children when they needed her. She always put her family before herself. She just had back surgery in Feb.. And went back to work sooner than she should. She works hard and works 5-6 days a week. She has helped out a classmate for a benefit that has cancer. So to me my mom is the Hometown Hero.

At 38 years old she has a tough battle against colon cancer that has spread to her liver. She is so tough and still is always worried about others. She is one of God's angels here on earth!!
Mike Thomas - Waterford Michigan

He works on this every day for encredibly long hours. We are fortunate to have him helping us in our area. He has helped countless boys grow with the scouting program and go on to earn the highest rank in scouting (eagle scout). I aspire to help as many kids as Mike has.

Michael Nichols - Detroit, MI
I think it's great to see a young person take time with other young people. It serves as a good example of how people can and will sow seed into others lives just because they care and not because they're looking for some type of reward.
Darrell Hoot - Huntertown, Indiana
I'm nominating my grandpa because he is a very active and amazing person in his community. He volunteers with the Lion's club and runs all kinds of fund raisers to help children and the community. Every Saturday in the Spring and Fall during soccer season, he runs a concession stand and cooks up all kinds of good food and goodies like elephant ears for the kids. He sells them at low prices, but all the proceeds go to help good causes. He also does this every night during baseball season. I don't know how he keeps up doing all that food prep and cooking, but he and grandma do it! They love the kids and Grandpa even built all the picnic tables and the concessions stand himself! He loves doing this and won't stop. He's an incredible guy and my hero!
Anderson Woodard, Jr. - Detroit, Michigan
My daddy is my home town hero because he works hard to provide for me, my mom & my sister. Even though he works 6 days and 10 hours he always find time for us to do family things, like dominos, uno, fishing and going out for dinner. He's a loving & caring father. He listens to me whenever I have a problem & he's always there for me.

Bishop William Murphy jr. - Rochester, Mi
Bishop Murphy is my pastor at New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. He is one of the most humble man I know. He really cares about each and every one of his members as if we were his family. Not only does he ministers to 3 locations but he also is a Bishop over many churches. He is deserving of a break for not only him but his children. He has been there for me even when sometimes I did not deserve it. He is very involved with winning souls in the community.
Thomas Fisher - Toledo, OHIO
My hero is my fiance, Tom. Tom's best friend, his father, recently passed away on July 1st from cancer. His death was a shock to all of us and happened very quickly. He did everything for his dad and misses him very much. He has worked so hard non stop for the last 7 years when our daughter was born. He someimes will even work 7 days a week for weeks at a time to make sure his family is provided for, especially when I don't get to work very many hours at my job. Our second daughter was born 1 year ago. He is always there to give a helping hand even if he has worked 13 hours a day. He would give someone his last penny if it meant making sure they had what they needed, literally- I have seen this happen. Tom's dad would want him to get out and enjoy life with his family. Please help Tom to get on and enjoy life with this great "nudge" back into having fun with his family- he needs it and my children need it...thank you!
Ray Leinhart - Haslett, MIchigan

Ray works in construction and is often using his trade to help those in need. Please consider RAymond Leinhart as your "hometown hero" as we consider him one of our heros. Thank you, Kelly Pines

Jennifer Molina - Fort Wayne,IN
I've known Jennifer since we were teenagers. We seperated during our young adult years, but didn't start talking again until 4 years ago. Over the years, I wondered about her. Her young life was chaotic and misguided. This was by no means her fault; sometimes our parents mess up and that carries on with us our whole lives. Jennifer's fate was always in my thoughts. When we did meet back up in our adult years, I was joyous to see that she made it. She went back to school and recieved her GED, and addition she attended college! I wish I could have been there to share in the moment of self-accomplishment. She's now working at Park View Hospital, something she has always wanted to do, and she's raising two wonderful children on her own. She'd also talked about going back to college to better herself and her family. She gave her two sons, Marcos & Jesse, someone to look up to. I love you Jennifer.
Kevin and Chanda - Bristol, IN
They are my hero's because they have tried for many years to conceive their own children. After many attemps, and high and low emotions, they decided to become foster parents and see what the future holds for them. Ater many months and weeks of background checks, classes, and waiting periods, they finally got their wish, they were parents. Most of us moms slowly get worked into it with pregnancy, showers, infantcy and baby months. Well, Kevin and Chanda got a call and was asked to take two boys, brothers, ages 3 1/2 and 2 1/2. I won't go into details about their homelife, but they desperately needed Kevin and Chanda's love and help. I seen these two boys days after Chanda and Kevin got guardianship of them. My heart went out to those two boys and to Kevin and Chanda because they became parents to two boys that could for the most part talk, walk and eat and needed help emotionally. And to see where tey are today, it warms my heart. Kevin and Chanda have given their hearts, time, devotion and patience, lots of it and have given these two boys life, something they were not getting before. And if given back in the future, it wont' be how it is now. I know the boys will be forever thankful for them. I'm forever thankful of them for giving back to children in need in America. I pray they will be in our lives forever. That is why I am nominating Kevin and Chanda for being my hero's. To Chanda and Kevin "Thank you for giving your love and hard work back to the children in our country, even if it is only for a short amount of time. You will have forever changed theirs." Thank God for Foster Parents.
Jessica Simon - Fort Wayne,IN
Jessica is a mother of four. She has been a friend of mine since I was 17. Over the last four years, Jessica has grown. She has managed to go to school full time, raise her four beautiful children, and babysit to pay bills. Recently she just graduated from Tristate with her bachelors degree. Jessica is a great person and always willing to help out. If it is the middle of the night and you need a friend, you call her. She's there. She takes great care of all the children she watches and treats them as if they were her own. She is supportive to her family and friends and always willing to help out. I have never met anyone like her. She is a strong, caring and loving person. Anyone she meets she touches in a positive way.I think she and her family would enjoy a trip and I know that they deserve it.

Ian and Robert Killenberger - Howell, MI
Ian and Rob have been the greatest sons a mother could ask for. They make it worthwhile to keep on going when things get tough. I just have to look at them and they make me smile every single day. We have been through some very tough times together and they seem to undertand and take it in stride. When I can't give them the things they want, they don't complain and pitch in to help me take care of the things we need to accomplish to keep home and family together. I thank God every day for my wonderful sons. And I want to include my oldest son, Jeffrey Watson, in this, too. He is always there when I need him. We all love each other unconditionally and help take care of each other, no matter what.
Jean Goostrey - Jackson MI
Jean is a remarkable mom and grandmother. She once was on vacation and washing clothes in a laundromat when she spotted a young military couple counting their collective change to go get a snack while their laundry was drying. When they left for the store across the street, she opened one of their clothes dryers and tossed a bunch of one dollar bills in! She's always doing so much for her family and others.
billy joe marks - elkhart in

Kyle - Westland, Mi
My hero is my husband Kyle. I honestly do not even know where to begin. First of all he is the man I always dreamed of. He changed my life from a fatherless only child to a wife and mother of two wonderful children for which I will always be greatful. It is great to have a family of our own. And thank goodness we all stick together because my husband got laid off nearly two years ago. He decided at that time there was no better time than the present to return to school to fullfil his lifetime dream of becoming a firefighter. He graduated from the Fire Academy with the top Practical Award, received his EMT license, and just recently received his Paramedic certificate. He was even the most supportive person when I recently lost my job and he was the one wiping my tears and making me feel better. Among all of his great accomplishments he is the best hands on and most attentive daddy that I could've asked for. He is definetly my hero and I am more than thankful for him!!
MICHAEL - N. MANCHESTER,IN 46962

She works very hard and I appreciate and love her for that.

Michael - Waterford, Michigan
I finally met my Mr. right, who is my hero. He is a very giving and loving father and husband. My husband recently adopted my son and gave him his last name. My husband and I also have custody of his two daughters. My husband was in a serious car accident in late April, but is still worried and puts his family first before his own health. Any of his children can count on him for anything, as I can do the same. He is also always willing to lend a helping hand to his other family members, co-workers, and friends. This man is nothing more than a true hero to his family, and deserves to spend a fun filled day relaxing and having fun with his family. Regardless of Michael being acknowledged by others as a hometown hero, he will always be a hero to our family. I would like to thank him for everything he has done, and let him know that we all love him very much! Thanks Michael for being my husband and our kids dad, I could not have asked for anyone any better! You do so much for us, I wish we could do more for you!

Marjorie - Chesterfield, MI
my mom is my hero. When she was dying of cancer she would tell me how great of a mother i am and worry about myself and my family all the time when all i could think about was loosing her. For her to think about me and not herself at a time like that was beyond me.
Norma Thompson - Elkhart Indiana
Norma has had a very tough year!! She came here in January from ohio to stay with her daughter and spend time with her great-grandchildren. She went to the hospital in march with pnuemoina and ended up on life support with congestive heart failure. The doctors said it was not good and the family was called in. Her 3 year old great granddaughter sat at her side and held her hand for almost 2 hours and all her vitals started going up. She came out of it a few days later. A month later she was diagnosed with breast cancer and in may she had a masectomy. She has always told her great granddaughhter that "she made mamaw all better cause she held her hand." This would be a great gift for her because she could take her grandchildren as a thank you for making her "all better. "
Jaida Robinson - Clinton Twp, MI
My daughter Jaida is my hometown hero. She is 7 years old and brings joy to so many. She is a beautiful, caring and loving person. For five years after my son (Jalen) was born, my husband I tried to have another child, and to no avail we decided that it wasn't meant to be. Four years after that I was rushed to the hospital diagnosed with meningitis and we didn't know what the outcome might be. Several hours later after some testing was done, the doctor told us that we were pregnant and the treatment would have to be very careful administered. Not only did God bring me through the sickness, I now have this beautiful 7 year old that has the heart of an angel. She's strong, healthly, smart and funny. They are nine years apart but they adore eachother. We have truly been blessed with two beautiful children and I thank God for them everyday.
Jeremy W - Woodhaven, Michigan
Jeremy is one of the most loving boys you'll have come across. In his 13 years of life, he has quite a few obstacles to over come and yet he always worries about how others are feeling. He does his best to make others happy, even when it means sacrificing his own wants. Jeremy is a hemophiliac and has been unable to participate is many of the sports his siblings can. Instead of pouting or being down over it, Jeremy encourages and cheers his brothers on a football games. He has also been asked to serve as a camp counselor at the camp he attends yearly for children with blood disorders. Finally, he never forgets my birthday or mother's day. He is always doing little things to make my days brighter. I am very proud to have Jeremy as my son.
Amanda Antes - Michagan
Shes My Mom she Gave me birth
Rebekah Hubley - Fort Wayne, IN
Rebekah is simply an amazing woman. She is the mother of 4 children, 3 of which have special needs. One of her children was recently adopted from the country of Haiti. He is blind. To already have children with special needs and then to adopt another child who will take special care is beyond my understanding. But Rebekah and her husband saw a need and have moved forward in faith. They seem to have been blessed with strength and love beyond measure. In the midst of caring for her children and in the process of adopting their son, Rebekah, along with a friend, began a new ministry called ?Hands that Heal? Through this ministry Rebekah and her friend are striving to provide medical aid to needy children in Haiti by bringing them to the United States. This ministry is already helping several small children. Rebekah demonstrates selfless love everyday. It is just astounding what she is doing. There are many other things that could be said about all that Rebekah has gone through and yet through it all has continued to give of herself - her love, time & energy to others She puts all others and their needs above hers and she is most deserving of this nomination..
Nikolas - livonia, michigan
My son Nikolas is my hometown hero. He is 4 years old. In June of this year, my girlfriend and I took them to the Livonia spree where he and his best friend Milla enjoyed the rides. They then played a game where they had to throw the ball into a glass jars and if the ball made it the child would win a goldfish. Milla was able to win a goldfish and Nikolas got the bonus (2 goldfish)! He was so excited when they handed him a baggie filled with water with his goldfish, he even named them Milla and Nikolas. While enroute home, Milla was sad that the day was over and that Nikolas and her had to part. As they were getting into their vehicle Nikolas said, "Milla wait". With much suprise I saw him hand to Milla his fish and said, "Here are Nikolas and Milla fishes", I give them to you so you will not be sad for leaving today till we play again they can keep you company. He handed the bag to her with such grace as Milla's eyes sparkled with joy.
When I asked him how did he think of that he said "sharing is carrying, mama".
selby risner - webberville, michigan
My son works hard every single day and is raising his three children in a loving home. He has been through many many hardships but has come through a stronger and joyous man. He and his wife sacrifice so she can be a stay-at-home mother. And they are there each and every day for each other and their children.
Ethans Mom - South Lyon, Michigan
The lady i babysit for is my biggest hero. She may not be anyone else's, but she is mine. She is not only a single mother, working full time jobs, but she is the mother of an autistic child. He sure is a handfull and can get out of control easlie. Even though putting up with him is hard enough and trying to earn enough money to pay the rent, but something even worse happened not to long ago. Their apartment building burned down. Supposivly someone left the oven on. it burned everything. All her childs toys, their furnuture, everything. For a while we had them living with us till they could afford enough money to buy a new house or apartment. It took them a long time to afford a new house, and when they did her car got taken away, because she couldnt afford it anymore. Everything seemed to be going wrong. We helped them out alot and they are getting back with it. She is my hero, because she has gone through more than anyone should have to go through.

Larry is my son-in-law. He is not just my son-in-law, he is a wonderful husband to my daughter and the best Dad to their 3 children. Larry works for the State of Indiana as an Officer in the Juvenile Correction Facility. He is wonderful with these children and makes a difference in their life every day he is at work. Larry works the 12 hour schedule, and on his days of not going to work, he stays at home and cares for the 3 children. These days are quite long, his wife, my daughter leaves for work @ 6 a.m. and does not get home until 6:30 p.m. Larry is a soft spoken, kind, extremely family oriented young man, ( he is 30 ) I know Larry would enjoy this outing with his family.

Jenna Jaye McLean - Saginaw, MI
Jenna is my 10-year old daughter. At the age of 8, Jenna decided that she wanted to do something to help others. While watching a television show together, a commercial came on requesting donations for pediatric cancer research. She asked me what pediatric cancer was and why the children in the commercial didn't have any hair, so I explained. She then looked at me and said "well, I don't have any money to give them but I can give them my hair." For two-years she grew her hair without hesitation and this past May had 12 inches cut off for Locks Of Love. Whenever I feel unsure of something or down on myself, I think of the unselfish thing that my daughter did and realize what a hero I have.

Mary Davis - Greenfield, Indiana
My hero hasn'y exactly done anything for our hometown but she has done amazing things for my family! 2 years ago my husband and I had an 8 year old son pass away. At the time I was not working and I have been a stay at home mother for years. The tragety really put us in a financial bind and when it was time for me to get a job, I had no experience in anything exept for taking care of my children and being a wife.Needless to say when I did find a job it was at minimal pay. My in-laws have taken all of our burdens on, everything from paying our bills to buying our groceries and everything our 2 daughters need. From school clothes, supplies, registration fees. If it were not for them and The Lord above, I don't know where we would be. I have no family to ask for help so they are the only ones that provide for us. I know at times they have run into financial problems from paying thousands of dollars to help us. God has bleesed us with 2 wonderful heroes and I could never thank them enough or repay them for all of the things they have sacrificed for our family. So I would love for them to be able to get away from it all. Because of us, they have not been able to take a vacation or have a night away in years. It is the least that I can do is try to get them some alone time. Thank you for your consideration!
Jacob Strothoff - Portage, Indiana
Jacob was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the tender age of three years old. He took on all the responsibilities that came with this disease right away. He was checking his own blood sugar one week after being diagnosed. When he was four years old we found out he had celiac disease, which is an intolerance to gluten (wheat, rye, barley and oats). He stuck to the diet right away and still to this day NEVER cheats for he is VERY well aware of how he'll feel if he does. My son decided he wanted to do something to rid this disease once and for all. So we started walking in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's walk EVERY year since our diagnosis and he has raised over $25,000.00 for the cause. He is an inspiration to many family members and friends for his determination and strength.
Rob - Waterford, MI

Stephany Bourne - Fort Wayne, IN
Stephany Bourne was my children's elementary school principal last year. Steph is truly passionate and enthusiastic about her job. She knows the names of all children in her school along with their family situation. She consistently goes out of her way to help the less fortunate in our school. I have known of her to feed, clothe, arrange transportation, seek medical attention, provide books and school supplies, and whatever else it takes to help these children succeed; most times at her own expense. She is the most caring, supportive, enthusiastic, and knowledgable of principals I have come across. As we move often, I have come across many. We are moving again and I can only hope my children will have a principal as caring and giving as Stephany Bourne.

Faith Habegger - Monroe, Indiana
Faith is my six year old little girl. She has beaten unbelieveable odds in her little life. She was born with a very rare and serious medical condition called Pentalogy of Cantrell. This condition is comprised of not having a sternum, diaphragm, or muscle coverage on her abdomen. She spent the first six months of her life in Riley Hospital for Children in the NICU. Faith was placed on a ventilator and had a feeding tube. She was not expected to survive, something we were told from day one. After her six month stay we were finally able to come home from the hospital, but with Faith on a home ventilator, trach, and still with the feeding tube. We lived like this for several years. My husband and I were her only caregivers during this time. Faith was as normal as you can imagine, even with such unbeatable odds. She blossomed and would laugh, talk, walk, learn and play like most other children her age - all while conected to the six foot breathing circuit of the ventilator. Faith has had to undergo anesthesia and operating room visits 21 times in her six little years. We traveled to Philadelphia last year to have her major repairative surgeries. They were very successful, but Faith still does not have a sternum. She will not have this surgery until her early teen years. By God's grace, Faith was able to come off the ventilator in December. She also had her trach removed a couple of months ago. What a blessing it is to have those gone! She is now able to get in the water, as she wasn't able to do this, obviously, with a trach and vent. Faith has amazing character. She is the sweetest, most polite little girl. I am so proud of her. She is my biggest hero. She has faced, and overcome, the greatest of odds. We have had many people tell us that Faith has given them strength. By watching what she has had to overcome gives them strength for their own difficulties. Faith would absolutely be delighted at spending a day at Splash Universe. She has worked so hard and would love the opportunity to play in the water - something that at one point we thought she would never get to do. She is a testament to her name, and we would very much appreciate your consideration for a beautiful fun filled day for her. Thank you so very much. Jen Habegger
Mason & Wyatt MacKenzie - Walled Lake, Michigan
These are my boys. I am a single mother and was in an auto accident on 04/01/08 that still leaves me in pain with an undetermined diagnosis and crippleing affect. My boys are 10 & 6 and have to refrain from everyday habits of running up and hugging or jumping at me. To me they are the hero's on the homefront. Bless thier little hearts they have been so understanding and have helped out way more around the house than they should have to for thier ages. I am usualy stuck lying down with ice packs for the majority of the day and they have stepped in and helped with some chores that would be painfull for me to do without me asking. When I am in tears from the pain, my 10 year old will try to mentally distract me by asking me math equasions. They try thier hardest not to bicker between each other, not easy, but they have lighten up. I feel horrible that I cannot physically do the things that I need to do and still do not know why. It is very frustrating and I loose my patients, but these guys do not loose thier patients with me. I honestly believe I am very blessed and my two boys are my heros!
Brenda Savage - Flint, Michigan
My mother has always been a person to help people when in need and this last christmas she has really made me feel that she deserves a hero nomination. She had collected cabbage patch kids for many years from the time they came out and up to just a couple of years ago. They never came out of the box for the fact she got them just to look at. She has always said that if anything should ever happen to her that those precious dolls would go to children that were in need of a smile for the world has somehow cheated them out of that for so long. Then came a sad time in our lives that we had lost my father to cancer after a battle that wore him out and he could no longer fight this evil within. In this time my mother had felt that the time was here for her to smile once more and feel the happiness that she had lost once again. In this moment she decided it was time to give those dolls some homes...she dusted them off and gave them one last smile and gave them to the children's ward at the hospital at christmas time so just in case someone forgot what christmas cheer was and lost that smile would once again be whole. Now those smiles that she had loved so much from those dolls had made some children smile again.
Tell me that isn't a hero and I will have to look into what a true hero is once again for I have seen my mother smile once again out of joy.
Thank you and have a nice summer.
Tracy - Elkhart

Suzanne Smith - Fort Wayne, Indiana
Suzanne Smith is an incredible hero, not only for her hometown, but for her country. Suzanne left her family, her friends, and her home to serve her country in Iraq for 18 months. Saying goodbye to her 4 young children and leaving this comfortable life could not have been easy. Now back at home in Fort Wayne, she continues to do and to give. In the 18 months she was protecting all of us, lots changed in Fort Wayne for her, and she is reminded of those challenges every day. Her faith and her incredible gift to give and to do for others makes Suzanne my choice for a great person, a great friend, a great example, and an outstanding hometown hero.

Betty Ann Hagerty - Fort Wayne, IN
The following was written by her coworker:
We would like to take the time to recognize Betty Ann for her heroic efforts in saving the life of a 13 year old boy.
On July 24th Betty Ann was on her way home driving through her addition and happened to see a boy riding fast on his bike; he hit a bump and flipped over the handle bars, falling directly on his head. His friend was riding ahead of him and did not realize it happened. Betty Ann jumped out of her car and ran to help the boy who, by then, was staggering toward the road. He was bleeding profusely from his head and was in and out of consciousness. The friend did return to the scene and Betty Ann had him run up to a house to call 911. Betty Ann had the friend call the biy's father. By this time he had become pale, cool and clammy. The ambulance came within 5 minutes, and as the ambulance arrived so did his father. (Betty Ann found out later that they had to resuscitate him once in the ambulance.) He was taken to the ER, and placed in Intensive Care on a ventilator.
He went through 2 major surgeries, it was one of the worst skull fractures the surgeon had ever seen and he said the boy would?ve died within minutes if Betty Ann had not been there to get help.
Betty Ann was reluctant to see the family and the boy in case he had a bad outcome, but was encouraged to do so by her coworkers. She went up with her husband on the fourth day and was greeted very emotionally by the boy?s father who began crying on her shoulder and thanking her. He even said he prayed that he would get the chance to meet her personally and thank her for being his son?s angel. Then, to Betty Ann?s surprise she was taken to his bedside where he was sitting up smiling and eating a Popsicle, when he saw her he said ?I remember you, you were there telling me you wouldn?t leave me.? He then began to cry.
The family insisted on taking a picture with Betty Ann, and even the patient?s nurse stated that he had heard about her. Betty Ann had no idea that the family had been wishing and praying to meet her. They exchanged addresses and phone numbers, and will keep in contact with her. We would just like to say that we are very proud and honored to work with such a wonderful person. We truly believe she was meant to drive by that day and was used to save his life.
austin tingay - michigan center, mi

Matt works with the young men on the residential campus, supporting the house parents and impacting these young lives in a positive way. Tracey oversees the foster care program in the Wabash area for over 70 children in foster homes. They live on the White's campus so Matt can be available whenever he is needed, no matter time or day. Tracey also works many hours supporting foster families and children. Their two children have been raised within this amazing ministry to so many children and the family really deserve and need a special weekend away as a family. Their lives are committed to making a difference in others' lives. Their love and commitment to the children and youth at White's as well as their own two children make them my heros.
Mary Kidd - New Haven Indiana
My sister is my hero. She is the mother of three children and 7 grandchildren. Mary is the most loving and giving person I know. She is always there for any of her family. She cares for the grandchildren every day, babies included, keeps her house up and if you pop in on her, you will find her on the floor playing with kids. A perfect of example of what a gramdma should be like. She keeps her children in her heart, her family on her mind and Jesus by her side. MY HERO IS MY SISTER MARY.
sandy
Chris - Fort Wayne, IN
Chris is my hero because of his determination. After only 2 weeks back to work I lost my job. Chris began working a second job to help out while I was trying to look for work. For the past two months he has been working from 2am until 11:30pm nonstop to help out. He devotes all of his time an energy into supporting his family and instead of coming home and sleeping or complaining about all the work he always has a smile on his face. No matter how tired he is he always helps out around the hous e or with the baby and never complains. Chris deserves this. He needs to be shown how much he is appreciated for all of his hard work and he just needs a break.
John Gunder - New Haven IN
My husband is a firefighter in new haven, he is the most dedicated man to his profession I know. He goes above and beyond the call of duty everyday. His career has always come first in his life. He responds to every call, attends all trainings and he is always there for every new volunteer just joining who needs his help for whatever it may be. He is not only our families hero but our neighbors hero also. A few years ago our neighbor suffered a stroke while carrying in his groceries and fell in the drive way in the middle of winter. He was outside all night. Some how managed to crawl under his car (he was 70 yrs old for heavens sake) Luckily my husband was going to a class at 8 am and saw dick lying in the drive way, ran across the street, pulled him out from under the car and called 911 and started CPR. My husband saved his life. The doctors said 30 more min. and he probably would have died. I am so very proud of my husband.
Gerald Crafton - Hammond, Indiana
My dad is always there for me to teach me and guide me through life. My dad has a dangerous job that helps keep children safe. He is my hero.

Ted - Southgate, MI
My husband Ted is my hero because inspite of a rough start in our marriage he was able to keep things going. When we got married he adopted my daughter and he has custody of his daughter as well. He has been my rock and support on going back to school. He has taken up the slack by working nights and evenings so that we don't have to pay for childcare. I really appreciate all that he has done and making our family happy and fun again. I Love you Ted! From your loving wife, Meegan.
Mellissa Cox - Decatur Indiana
She is super amazing! Mellissa is my aunt and she is only 28 years old. She has 3 beautiful children, the oldest having autism is a handful himself. Yet, she still strives to give her children and family everything. About 5-6 months ago, Missy (mellissa) was living in a nearby town, preble, she took her three children, A.J., Gavin, and Jonathon, to the local swimming pool. The didn't have much money due to the fact that the economy is slowing down and her husband had recently been on a temporary lay off. While at the swimming pool her middle child Gavin, was jumping off the diving board and fell wrong and smacked his face, nearly biting all the way through his tounge. While she was at the hospital with Gavin, she got a call from the county sheriff saying that her window air conditioner which was plugged in at home, had caught fire and there was nothing left of her home. Since then she's regathered her life and moved her family to a new home in Decatur. I am only 18 and recently found out i was pregnant and she constantly asks me what she can do to help. It doesn,t always seem like a lot to some people, but just the simplest things can make someone a hero. She is mine because even though so much has happened in her life, she still puts others in front of herself! She is such an awesome person!
Ryan Thomas - Indianapolis, IN
My husband is my hero. He is the most caring and loving person I know. He gives his time freely to so many others that are in need. He is selfless. He is thoughtful. He is a strong person and a Christian leader for our family. Recently, he lost his grandfather and great-grandmother. Through it all, he was strong and really helped bring his family make it through. He not only my hero, but a hero to many others.
Darlene Sandefur - Merrillville, IN
Darlene, my mother, is a real hero to me. i don't think it's fantastic events of courage or once-in-a-lifetime moments and stepping up to the plate that make a hero, but rather how they act and manage to keep the peace in their every day life. It's been proven time and time again when my mom has gone out, that without her this household just falls apart. She's the glue that keeps us together and mediates the arguments, provides the love, and proliferates the fun. She's always turning her eyes to the brightside and holding steadfast to her faith in God, which is truly inspirational to me. When I came out to her and my father, it was her unconditional love and support that helped me through one of the most rough and unpredictable times of my life. She's been the drive behind me working through school and getting into a fine University this year. My mom is truly a hero because when she makes a commitment to something, she keeps her word to it as is evident through her 20 years of marriage--through the good and the bad. My mom is my hometown hero and I don't care if it sounds trite or cliche, because I honestly don't believe many people can say they have an incredible woman like this in their life this day and age and I appreciate her.
Helen - Toledo, Ohio
My mom is a wonderful person all around. She helps anyone in need. She always thinks of others before herself. She has a very important and stressful job and she also baby-sits for my sister. She never does anything for herself, I'd like to see her have a little fun!
Jeff Thompson - Sawyer, MI
Jeff is a great husband and father and a VERY hard worker. He works 40++ hours and week and then comes home to either help a friend or neighbor or in-laws. Whether he's at work trying to get molds up and running or at home fixing a neighbors car or replacing windows, building room additions, he never complains. I nominate Jeff as our hometown hero so he realizes just how much we appreciate him and love him around here.
Raina & Emberlin Powell - Birch Run, MI
My daughters are my heros because they are both my miracle babies...I was not supposed to have any babies and was blessed with two beautiful baby girls. Shortly after they were born, I unexpectedly became a single mother & they help to keep me going day after day. They bring sunshine to my life and make me laugh whenever I am down. I love and appreciate my girls more than anything in the world. Thank you for being my heros Raina and Emberlin!!!
Angela - Warren, Michigan
What makes my Mom a hometown hero is she is always there for me when I need her, and when I am down she asks what wrong, and tells me how to slove the problem. Another reason why I think she is a hero to me is because she isn't just a Mom she is a best friend, she isn't just a worker she is a succeder. I think she really works gard on being a Mom, and treating me the way I want to be treated, but there are some times where we fight, but she is still a Mom, and she is the one I adore the MOST!!
my mom - moline, ohio
my mom is my hero she has never given up she has been hurt so many times and still she stayed strong she is the most amazing person i have ever met she raised us all by her self and i give her alot of credit for that because she did a excellent job at it i am one of 4 and i am the oldest and i am so proud of her

Peter - Flint Mi
Our dad is one of the greatest, strongest men we know. He back in January spent about 2 months in the hospital and they told us that we could of lost him but my dad was strong and kept fighting. He has always been there for us. No matter what has happened he has always made sure that we got what we needed. He is an amazing man and we love him very much.
audra holmes - ecorse, michigan
Audra Holmes is my hero because she is a strong, loving, dependable, caring lady. She has taken care of every member of her family. She was the caretaker for her mother, father, and now she is taking care of her sister. Her sister has had 2 strokes. She moved her in with her. She has helped me out tremendously. She helps support my children and I. I am a single parent with 2 children. She helps me with them. She is at everything they participate in. She picks them up from school for me. She has never told me no when it came to my kids. She has never told me no when it has come to me.
She has helped me with finances. She has helped me buy 3 cars and house. She has helped me to get out of debt by paying off some of my credit cards. She is such a giving and loving mother. If it wasn't for her I do not know where I would be today. All I have to do is say I need her and she is always there. She will help a stranger in need. Thank you mama. I love you.
Lisa Repp - Plymouth, Indiana
Lisa works at the hospital in Plymouth and devotes her time to comforting others. When someone is scared, she lets them know that she is there for them, caring for them. Often she is on call, never being able to travel for in case of an emergency. When she is not working, she is a devoted mother of two. Giving encouragement at ball games and day to day struggles. Her kindness, gentleness and caring is exactly what we need more of in this world and she is a wonderful example of hero. She needs to know she is a hero, everyday.
Dad - Monroe MI
My Dad helps me when i'm down in the dumps and tought me a lot of things i need to learn in life. Like he tought me about cars and their engins, when my mom went to the bahamas he took my sister and I to his work and introduced us to his co-workers then explained to us what he does for a living.
My Dad is the one I can depend on to learn history of world war1&2.
One time, my Dad practicly saved my life!I practicly got groundede for somthing I didn't do! THANK YOU DAD!
Christine Stutz - Fort Wayne, IN
I'd like to nominate a good friend of mine, Chrissie Stutz for always having a positive attitude with whatever life has to throw at her. She is 30 now, but back in her 20's she was with a man who abused her physically all the time and got away with it up until her late 20's. She had a little boy with this man 7 years ago and has been taking care of him all alone ever since. She had gotten laid off from her 10 year job about a year or more ago, and stressed daily about how she was going to put food on the table for her child. She recently started going back to school full time while juggling the everyday tasks of being a mother (of a 7 yr old boy who doesn't appreciate much), on an unemployment salary, a full time student and a great friend. I nominate her because even through all this she has always said "god will show me the way" and kept her head up pointing to the sky.
Darren Estepp - Columbia City, Indiana
My hero is my husband he is a wonderful person, he works 50 hours a week, and he attends school two nights a week. He went back to school to better himself and his family, and to pursue the career he has always wanted. He is a very active member in church, when there is anything that is needed to do, he will take the time out of his busy scheduale to do it. He will help out any of his friends, or even a stranger if it is in his power. He has a very busy scheduale but he always makes sure he has time for his family, he is an assistant cub scout leader, and he always will help his children out if they need something. He is very busy but he is never to busy to help someone out, or give them a word to uplift them.
Lacey - Niles, MI
Lacey is a 21 yr old, hard working Mother of a very busy little girl Lily, whom is 18 months. Throughout Lacey's School days and even now she has been involved with everything imaginable in our community. She is involved in Relay for life, Adopt a family, and many other community events, and does it all voluntarily. In December 2007 her Father passed away from Cancer. Taking care of her small daughter and working two jobs and being highly involved in the community she has not had any "Lacey" time.It would be great for Lacey and her family to get the fun relaxing break, that she deserves.
Jon Roeske - Northville, MI
I would like to nominate my grandson, Jon, who is seven years old. A week before Christmas, 2007 he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He has accepted his illness like a trooper. In a flicker of seconds, his life changed forever. He has never complained, accepted all pokes and shots (which are several in a day) without any hesitation. We all love him very much and are extremely proud of our "hero".
Niccole Reinstein - River Rouge,Mi 48218
I would like to nominate my wife Niccole she is a wonderful wife and mother. She is great to my kids and me. We have 3 kids of are own and also adopted 2 of her sisters kids. Her sister passed away back in October at 37 and my mother a week later. she has been the anchor of the family. Always giving encouraging words. We want to take the family on vacation but its always a money issue with such a large family. So if anyone deserves a time of relaxation its my wife she is my hero.
Mara Soder (zett) - Crest Hill Illinois
My step daughter has CP...She lives life as a personal hero to everyone around her with her Zest and outlook on life...Wanna be happy MEET HER!!!!
My Daughters - Troy, Mi
My two eldest daughters are hands down, my hero?s! They are amazing young women who never let the challenges they face get in their way of living life to its fullest, no matter how hard or impossible things seem for them. They were both diagnosed with a rare type of retinal disease which has claimed most of their vision, resulting in legal blindness. Our first daughter to be diagnosed was just 9 when we were told she was loosing her eyesight to this unforgiving disease. She was already legally blind by the time they figured out what was wrong with her. Our world had changed instantly, as we knew it. We had never heard of this disease and had no traceable family history before then. We were in shock to say the least. What amazed me immediately and to this day about our first daughter diagnosed is her determination and drive. She has excelled in everything she has ever done and no doubt ever will do?.?I can?t? is not part of her vocabulary. Quitting is never an option. She has always been in advanced academic programs, won numerous music awards, was a varsity cheerleader and is a beautiful figure skater. She graduated from high school with honors, recently graduated from MSU and is now starting Law School this fall. She also has other numerous health issues that continue to challenge her but in spite of it all she just keeps reaching for her dreams with amazing resilience. Our eldest daughter was diagnosed at 18 with the same eye disease but her situation was very different from our first daughter. She had already graduated high school and had a driver?s license when she started to loose her vision. She had just started to spread her wings and fly as a freshman in college, when this disease struck her and turned her life upside down. Even though times were extremely rough for her as she readjusted her lifestyle to her declining vision, she too did not stop fighting. She maintained a ?Can Do? attitude even in the toughest of times. And, like her sister, she didn?t stop fighting for what she wanted and excelled much the same. She eventually decided to follow her life?s passion, in spite of her visual struggles, and is amazing at her career. She married a wonderful man three years ago and they gave us our first grandchild, a little girl, who is the light of our life. They will also bless us again, this fall, with a grandson. Each of them has faced enormous challenges and obstacles with such unbelievable courage, s
